Texts: John 5:1-9, Proverb 23:18 – “For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off”.
Life is filled with mysterious happenings that only God can put an end to. All through scriptures we see men, women, and nations lifting up their voices to The Lord to have Mercy and put an end to afflictions and works of darkness in their lives. In 1 Samuel 1 Hannah called on The Lord to put an end to barrenness in her life, God did. In Isaiah 38, Hezekiah cried to The Lord to reverse a death sentence over his life; God hearkened and indeed reversed that verdict. In the land of Samaria in 2 Kings 6, there was a terrible famine and God hearkened by putting an end to that situation as the people called on Him. Also in 2 Kings 5, God put an end to leprosy in the life of Naaman. In Genesis 1:4, God put an end to darkness by decreeing Light to be. This morning, what do you want God to put an end to in your life and family?
From our above text John 5:1-9, we see an impotent man by the pool of Bethesda who had been in that state for about 38 years. A day came when The Lord had Mercy on him and put an end to that affliction. He couldn’t put an end to his unfortunate situation but God could. This means there are situations that only God can put an end to.
Human abilities and skills are grossly inadequate to put an end to the work of darkness;
thus, our dare need for God. In Mark 5, we find a woman with the issue of blood, no one knows her true name, but her pitiful situation became her identity. The Lord came to her rescue. In Psalm 136:23 says God remembered us in our low estate: for His mercy endureth for ever. Psalm 20:2 says “The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; The Name of The God of Jacob defend thee; Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion. In Mark 2:1-5, we find 4 friends who despite the odds walked their way through the obstacles to get in front of The Lord and beseeched Him to put an end to the lameness of their friend, The Lord honored their faith.
Lessons Learnt from John 5:1-9
1. Firstly, the impotent man was singled out for Mercy by The Lord.
2. Secondly, he was pulled out of the pool area, he was divinely relocated.
3. His red light was turned to green light as he was able to now move forward.
4. He ceased to be a spectator but now a beneficiary of testimonies.
5. He moved from dwelling in expectation to actualization of his miracle.
6. His wish was turned to his will (realization)
In conclusion, Isaiah 44:24 “Thus saith The LORD, Thy redeemer, and He that formed thee from the womb, I am The LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by Myself That frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish; That confirmeth the word of his servant, and performeth the counsel of his messengers; that saith to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be inhabited; and to the cities of Judah, Ye shall be built, and I will raise up the decayed places thereof: That saith to the deep, Be dry, and I will dry up thy rivers: That saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.
