Text: John 7:37.
” 37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.”
There is the coming to Christ for deliverance because He is The Great Deliverer; there is the coming to Christ for Healing, because He is The Great Healer; and there is the coming to Christ for Salvation because He is The Savior. The Lord in the above Text is inviting man to come and Drink of Him, The Living Water!
Thirst is an allegory for a need; the need could be spiritual, financial, marital, health, etc. Christ as The Living Water is God’s all-inclusive solution for man’s needs.
He is The Only Water that is Living. He is The Only Living Being man can drink. He is The Spiritual Rock that provided water for Israel to drink in the wilderness (1 Cor. 10:4). He is The Water that springs into Everlasting Life (John 4:13-14). He is The Water of Life (Rev. 22:17).
Man’s greatest need is God; through Christ Jesus, God has made Himself drinkable to man. This great invitation seems to suggest every man is thirsty and what quenches that thirst is no other than Christ Himself.
This is The Mystery of the Christian Faith, that man can Drink God! Christianity is God coming into Man. He comes into us by offering Himself as our Food and Drink. John 6:55. God comes into us through His Word (The Living Water) to be everything to us from within.
Why is The Lord inviting us to Drink of Him?
1. He wants to be our Life. He wants to live through us. John 6:55-57
2. We are Enriched by Him in all things, in all utterance and in all knowledge – 1 Cor. 1:5
3. It is The Christ we have drank that can flow out of us as Living Waters – John 7:38
The Lord’s Salvation is The Lord Himself. Whatever the need is, God’s goal is to be the solution from within. Nothing can satisfy us aside The Lord Himself. As we drink Him, He becomes our Wisdom, Strength, Light, Grace, Provision and Life from within. What God prefers to give us is Himself and not just things per se.
Isaiah 55:1 – “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.
How do we drink Christ? As The Word of God abides in us richly, out of our heart will flow Rivers of Living Waters.
Coming to the Church is coming to Drink of Christ – The Water of Life. I planted the seed, Apollos watered the plant, but it was God who made the plant grow. 1 Cor. 3:6
In closing, our real problem is insufficient drinking of Christ. John 4:13-14 – Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
God Bless You!
