Text: Exodus 3:1-10; 4;1-5, 20.
“3 1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. 2 And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. 4 And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, here am I. 5 And he said, draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. 6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
4 1And Moses answered and said, but behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The Lord hath not appeared unto thee. 2 And the Lord said unto him, what is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. 3 And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it. 4 And the Lord said unto Moses, put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand: 5 That they may believe that the Lord God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee. 20 And Moses took his wife and his sons, and set them upon an ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt: and Moses took the rod of God in his hand.” KJV
A Gift is something given by God for our divine repositioning.
A Gift is usually something voluntarily transferred from One person to another without compensation. There is a purpose for every gift; firstly, it shows that the giver cares about the beneficiary. Secondly, gifts are given to be used and not to be kept. God feels very honored when we put to work whatever He has given to us. In fact, He adds more grace to it as we use it. From our above text, Moses had a gift (rod) in his hand but never realized the power of that rod until a divine encounter with God. Many of us are like Moses with a rod (gift) but unaware of the power of that gift from God. Moses went through training in Pharaoh’s palace and his Father-in-law’s field.
Many negative situations that happen around us are like “a burning bush” that God wants to use to get our attention. God told Jeremiah to go to the potter’s house so as to speak to him in similitudes. He often uses elements of creation to speak to us.
How Can You Identify Your God-Given Gifts?
It is that thing that gives you fulfillment. It is that ability you rarely can give up. It might not look big, but it can change the world. Moses’ Rod was not big, but it parted the red sea. It is utilizing our gifts that provokes our divine repositioning.
How Can You Activate Your God-Given Gift?
- Identify and develop your gift. Exod. 4:2
- Cherish your gift – do not treat it lightly. Guard it diligently. Be proud of it.
- Pay attention to your gift; don’t be envious of other gifts.
- Do not neglect your gift.
- Pick up your gift.
God is always asking, what is in your hand? (unfortunately, many say nothing or despise what is in their hands). All through The Bible before any miracle, He would often ask the same question – Moses, widow of Zarephath, little boy with 5 loaves and 2 fishes, etc. Your gifts will open doors to you; celebrate what you have and always be grateful to God for it. When you neglect your gift, Satan will seize the opportunity to keep you grounded and frustrated in life. God has given everyone something that will bless humanity – it might be a song, book, unique skill, special ability, character, dressing style, etc.
Picking the Serpent by the tail is a dangerous thing, but God was indirectly telling Moses that he will use the rod to do impossible things. After the serpent became a rod, it no longer was Moses’ rod but now “the Rod of God”. We all are going to give an account for the gifts God has given us, He is a “Shrewd Businessman” waiting for fruitfulness.
He sentenced to eternal damnation that one servant that buried his gift; may that never be our portion in Jesus’ name, may We all hear on that last day, “Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord. Amen.
