Text: Numbers 21:8-9.
” 8 And the Lord said unto Moses, make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. 9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.” KJV
The incident in Numbers 21 was sovereignly prepared by God to reveal a particular type of Christ. God has provided Christ to be all things to us. He is our wisdom, strength, light, righteousness, life and all we would ever need to prosecute destiny. The Brazen Serpent is God putting away our pains by the sacrifice of Himself. The human race was bitten when Adam was bitten in Eden. The Serpent’s bite corrupted our nature; thus, we became Serpentine Beings in God’s sight, the entire fallen human race is of brood of vipers! The gospel places Christ before man, and keeps Him there, as God’s only remedy. The Brazen Serpent was a precious symbol of a precious savior. The Brazen Serpent was a testimony of God’s willingness to heal all that were bitten in the camp.
Christ is the Brazen Serpent; He became that which was killing us! The Brazen Serpent was Jesus in our stead to deliver us from the poison of death. The Brazen Serpent had to be lifted up conspicuously, where all eyes can gaze upon. Likewise, the Son of Man had to be lifted up in the center of the universe, where all can gaze upon for life. And I, if I be lifted up from the Earth, will draw all men unto Me. The Brazen Serpent had to be lifted up in order to be the Savior of the world. Christ as the Brazen Serpent is the ray of God’s Mercy to rebels. No other remedy in Heaven or Earth would have worked aside looking at the Brazen Serpent. His death is ours that we may live. All who are groping in darkness, are enlightened by looking at Him. All who are weak are strengthened by looking at Him. All who are afflicted are delivered by looking at Him.
Christ has been lifted up in the center of the world, that all eyes everywhere may behold Him. From His cross, He says – “Look unto Me and be saved, all the ends of the Earth” (Isa. 45:22). Whosoever looked to the Brazen Serpent in the Camp, was healed instantly & perfectly. We look to Christ for life in the threat of death. We look to Him for joy in the midst of sorrow. We look to Him for light in the midst of darkness. We look to Him for healing in the midst of sickness. Having provided His Son, God could appeal to Heaven and Earth, what could have been done more – that I have not done? What could be easier than “looking” to live! A child can look! The weak need no strength to look, the poor need no money to look!
In closing, He was God veiled as a Brazen Serpent, that men might see God and live! Isaiah 40:31 – But those who wait on the Lord, shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
God bless you!
