Text: John 9:4.
“4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.” KJV.
Purpose is God’s agenda for your life. Purpose is a program earmarked by God for you to fulfill on Earth. In Jer. 1:5 – God told Jeremiah (and every believer in Christ) that he was a seed of eternity and was sent to accomplish a specific assignment on earth. The greatest tragedy in life is not death but life without a purpose. It is a great tragedy to accomplish many things in life but fail to accomplish God’s purpose.
Purpose is very crucial, thus, the enemy fights with both hands to hinder all from pursuing it. Satan will even give you a lucrative profession to distract and make you miss out on your God’s ordained purpose. Heb. 10:7 – Then said I, Lo, I come in the Volume of the Book it is written of Me, to do Thy Will, O God. There is a Volume of Book concerning every one of us. We should seek the Lord for it so that we don’t live a careless life. Samson, Gehazi, Judah, etc. were all careless regarding God’s purpose for their lives.
Characteristics / Key Words of Purpose from John 9:4
- Purpose is a “Must”. I must work the work. Your purpose is a must, it is unnegotiable, many will suffer if you fail to pursue it. Imagine if Jesus had failed to accomplish redemption for humanity? 1 Cor. 9:16
- “Sent” – Somebody sent you to this World for a reason. You are not your own. – Ps. 100:3, Matt. 25:14-20
- While it is “Day” – You don’t have eternity to fulfill your purpose, there is a time-bound. Eccl. 3:1, Josh. 13:1, Matt. 25: 1-13
Reasons Why Many Fail to Fulfill Purpose
- Inability to differentiate between major and minor events in life. Major events are the ones with eternal value, while the minor are events that will terminate in this World. 1 Cor. 7:9
- Celebrating or idolizing past successes – there’s infinitely more God still wants to accomplish through your life. Jesus was always moving to the “other side” after almost every feat. You can still do more!
- Our poor attitude towards failures or challenges of life. Never allow your challenges or present situations to suspend God’s purpose. You are your purpose, and your purpose is you! Never allow offence or anything hinder you, remember you will give an account for it one day!
How Can I Fulfill My Purpose?
- Understand the concept of life. Your life does not consist of what you possess. (Luke 12:15). Your purpose is your life, not your spouse, nor your children nor your riches.
- Luke 4:18 defines our purpose in God. To preach the Gospel, heal the broken hearted.
- The love of God – Deut. 6:5. When you love God, you will set your heart on the things that are above and not things of this Earth. Col. 3:1-3
- Seeking The kingdom first in all you do. Matt. 6:33
- Constant communion with God. Acts 13:2-3. It is in His presence you get specific information regarding your purpose.
- Always walk in the light of God’s word – 1 Cor. 3:18, John 15:5
In closing, what chapter are you in the volume of God’s book for your life? Are you in introduction, main content or conclusion? Regardless of where you are now, do a self-assessment and pray for God to give you speed and grace to not be distracted from His purpose for your life.
God bless you!
