Text: James 1:22-25
“22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” KJV.
God is calling us to arise and be a perfect man. He is calling us to return to biblical fatherhood. One of the greatest needs in our society today is “authentic fatherhood”. Many children have been derailed due to bad fatherhood. Some men are confused about their identity as “men”. The word of God is what shapes and forges a man to be an authentic father. The word of God is that mirror that shows who you are in Christ and the expectations of Heaven concerning being a godly father. An authentic man is not defined by what they have or earn, but by the posture of their heart towards God and His word. If we place you before the mirror of God’s word, who do we see? Is it Christ or another Ahab? Ahab was a terrible father and king in Israel. 1 Kings 21:25
An authentic father is never too busy to set aside quality time with their wife and children. An authentic father is not an absentee father or a careless father like Eli (1 Samuel 3:11). God has called us fathers to be His true representative before our children. The Lord’s prayer in Matthew 6 is a pattern for authentic fatherhood. “Our Father, which are in Heaven, Hallowed be your Name..” We are structured as men to reflect the Image and nature of God.
A Father is a source (like our Heavenly Father), a life-giver or pro-creator. A father is the king in his family domain (you will be held accountable); you are in charge to bring in order and enforce God’s will in that family as it is in Heaven. A father is a provider for the family like our Heavenly Father provides our daily bread. A father must be a merciful Leader. Psalm 103.
What makes an Authentic Father?
- Lead courageously – Joshua 1:6-9
- There will be touch moments but rest in God
- Be bold, don’t abandon coaching and nourishing – 2 Sam. 11:1
- Stay where God has placed you, don’t abandon your duty.
- Take up Your Responsibility with all honor. 1 Timothy 5:8; and 3:4
- Earn the respect of your Wife and Children
- Surrender all Your Family to God – Joshua 24
- Don’t abandon your place as the Priest of that home.
- Let everyone know you are totally dependent on God
- Guard up your loins (like a Warrior) as you will one day answer for that Family – Job 38:3
An authentic father, you are a Lord or a god in your house, so as to enforce divine authority in that family – Psalm 82:5-6. A man that fears the Lord and walks in His ways is an authentic father – Psalm 128:1-4 says such a man will be blessed of the Lord, even all the days of his life. There is a great reward for every God-fearing father.
In closing, an authentic father is one it can be said that the spirit of the Lord is upon (Isaiah 61). Be a doer of the word God. Be a father who will raise godly children and build a legacy that is trans-generational. Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. Job 38:3.
