Text: Numbers 22:1-22 and Luke 15.
“1 Then the children of Israel moved, and camped in the plains of Moab on the side of the Jordan across from Jericho. 2 Now Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. 3 And Moab was exceedingly afraid of the people because they were many, and Moab was sick with dread because of the children of Israel. 4 So Moab said to the elders of Midian, “Now this company will lick up everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.” And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time. 5 Then he sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor at Pethor, which is near the River in the land of the sons of his people, to call him, saying: “Look, a people has come from Egypt. See, they cover the face of the earth, and are settling next to me! 6 Therefore please come at once, curse this people for me, for they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.” 7 So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the diviner’s fee in their hand, and they came to Balaam and spoke to him the words of Balak. 8 And he said to them, “Lodge here tonight, and I will bring back word to you, as the Lord speaks to me.” So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam. 9 Then God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?” 10 So Balaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me, saying, 11 ‘Look, a people has come out of Egypt, and they cover the face of the earth. Come now, curse them for me; perhaps I shall be able to overpower them and drive them out.’ ” 12 And God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.” 13 So Balaam rose in the morning and said to the princes of Balak, “Go back to your land, for the Lord has refused to give me permission to go with you.” 14 And the princes of Moab rose and went to Balak, and said, “Balaam refuses to come with us.” 15 Then Balak again sent princes, more numerous and more honorable than they. 16 And they came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Zippor: ‘Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me; 17 for I will certainly honor you greatly, and I will do whatever you say to me. Therefore please come, curse this people for me.’ ” 18 Then Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, “Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more. 19 Now therefore, please, you also stay here tonight, that I may know what more the Lord will say to me.” 20 And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men come to call you, rise and go with them; but only the word which I speak to you—that you shall do.” 21 So Balaam rose in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab. 22 Then God’s anger was aroused because he went, and the Angel of the Lord took His stand in the way as an adversary against him. And he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.”NKJV
God is not a talkative; He means what He says and says what He means. Divine direction is the heritage of every redeemed of the Lord. God is committed to guiding us if we are willing to following Him. Psalm 32:8. There is a carnal tendence in fallen man to seek independence from God (like the prodigal son).
Divine direction is a shift in the trajectory of a man orchestrated by Heaven in order to align with the divine blueprint. Man in his proud nature wants to do things in his own way without any input from God. Jeremiah 10:23 – O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps. Psalm 37:23 – The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. No matter is too insignificant when it comes to seeking the Lord. All through scriptures we see God giving directions to as many that truly sought Him. Many times, when God shuts a door, its because He is rescuing you from the way of perdition.
How does God direct and guide us – God’s word is His principal means of guiding us. All other means must never contradict the scripture. The Holy Spirit is also the spirit of truth and will never lead anyone contrary to the written word. Psalm 119:105. God can also use dreams to guide. Joseph in Gen. 37, Balaam in Numbers 22
Why do people want to choose their way rather than following God? There is a deception in human perspective as many are led by their physical senses – like Lot choosing Sodom and Gomorrah because of the inviting look of the landscape. Samson as well made a bad choice in marriage. Gen. 13.
Hearing from God is an art that must be learnt, it’s not a “microwave” technology. Many are not willing to invest the time in seeking the Lord, rather they are looking for “prophet suddenly”. God is never late; He is a restorer of time and seasons for He makes all things beautiful in His time. If He appears to come late (in the eyes of men), it is because He wants to manifest Himself in a glorious way – remember He waited for 4 days before raising Lazarus from the dead. Abraham and Sarah waited and today the World is still celebrating them.
How do you know you are in the wrong direction? When a decision is “self-induced” and compromises the truth for convenience. Satan can sometimes appear as an angel of light, thus, caution must be taken. Also when a decision ignores godly counsels – like from spiritual parents.
How do we solve the problem of hearing from God? You must trade your limited eyesight for God’s perfect vision. No man can see beyond their noise, God is the only Eternal One – He alone knows what is unknowable to men and angels. Known unto God are all His works from the beginning of the World. Acts 15:18
In closing, Psalm 37:5 says – Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass. Never forget, God is our Shepherd!
God Bless You, Richly!
