Text: 1 John 5:7.
“ 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” KJV
Who is God? What comes to your mind when you think about God? Who do you believe God to be?
God in His Essence is undefinable. No one definition can express all God is. God is One yet triune. He is One in His Being but Three in His Expression. In His One Being He exists as Three Persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God’s triuneness remains a mystery no mortal man can demystify.
God in His Trinity cannot be separated. God cannot be fully understood, His triuneness is too big and too deep. He is incomprehensible to the finite mind. Though He is incomprehensible, He has revealed certain things (attributes) about Himself to us in His word. He is Eternal because He has been before the Beginning and can never cease to be. He existed before He created anything. He is without an Origin; He is His own Origin. From everlasting to everlasting, He is God. Ps. 90:2
God being self-sufficient means He needs nothing from none but all need everything from Him. He created us for His pleasure and to have a relationship with Him. Rev. 4:11. God wants us to know who He is so we can know who we truly are. An attribute is a feature that uniquely defines a person. God’s attributes are what makes God, God – His nature, character, essence and “persona”. God’s attributes are things God has said to be true about Himself.
A Few Attributes of God
A. The Power of God
- Power is a force or influence. God is All-Powerful. Ps. 62:11 says Power belongs to God
- God doesn’t just have Power; He is Power itself! He cannot be stripped of His Power
- Creation is a Theatre displaying the Power of God
- All forms of Power emanates from God – Economic, Spiritual, Technological, Electrical, etc.
- What we know of God’s Power is so little; it’s like comparing a rain-drop to an Ocean.
- In His Sovereignty, He has given His Children a measure of His Power in the Person of the Holy Spirit
B. The Holiness of God
- Holiness means to be untainted by evil or sin.
- God’s Divine Nature is Holiness. He doesn’t have Holiness, He is Holiness!
- Holiness means God is Separate.
- God is Distinct & Peerless. He is His Own Class.
- Rev. 15:4, 2 Tim. 1:9
C. The Love Of God
- God is Love.
- Love is an intense feeling of deep affection.
- The Love of God is Eternal because God is Eternal
- His Love is Infinite, because He is Infinite.
- God’s Love is His Goodness and Kindheartedness towards His creatures
- Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love. Eph. 1:4
- His Love cannot be earned or bought; it is free and unmerited. Isa. 54:10
- He Loves us because He is Love, not because of anything desirable in us.
- While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
As God’s children in Christ Jesus, we have inherited some of His attributes (His Love, Holiness, Wisdom, Power, etc.). He shares these attributes with us so that we can be the expression of His attributes on the Earth.
We are Christians, because we are partakers of God’s Divine Nature.
God bless you!
