Speed To Overtake

Speed To Overtake

Ministering: Senior Pastor Shola Awobajo

Text: 1 Kings 18:41-46.

41 And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain. 42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees, 43 And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times. 44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down that the rain stops thee not. 45 And it came to pass in the meanwhile, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel. 46 And the hand of the Lord was on Elijah, and he girded up his loins and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.KJV.

Speed is moving quickly towards a goal. It is a rapid movement or action towards a definite goal or destination. God created speed from Gen. 1 – “Let there be Light”. It would be an aberration for a child of God to be stuck in life because our Father is a God of Speed. To overtake means to catch up with a goal and surpass it while traveling in the same direction. God is a God of Speed. His Light is the fastest thing in the Universe. As we approach the end of the Year, it’s time to take stock and assess whether we have made progress as planned. We all need God’s Speed in order to fulfill our Divine Assignment.

Timing is very critical in life, hence we need Speed to redeem the time. God has a calendar regarding every one of us. He has certain expectations of things that needed to have been accomplished before you attain a certain time or age. Time is an obedient servant who never stops for anybody, hence we need to make the most of every hour. There is a “record time” for many things on Earth, especially in certain Sports.

From our above Text, God gave Elijah speed to overtake those gone ahead of him. God is the Giver of Special Strength that enables any person to supernaturally overtake. God’s Strength will outrun any horse or chariot. There had been famine in the land and Elijah having tarried in the Presence of God discerned an outpouring of rain, and instructed Ahab to move quickly back to town. Mysteriously, Elijah through Divine Speed got to the City before Ahab and his chariot.

We all need good speed at this time of the year in order to recover wasted opportunities. In Gen. 24:12 Abraham’s Servant prayed to God to grant him good speed for the enormous assignment in his hand. God has a Divine Assignment that is time sensitive for every one of us, hence, daily we need to Pray for His Speed.

Hab. 3:19 says The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills. As believers in Christ, we belong to the top of the mountain.

Types of Speed – there is Slow speed (like a tortoise); there is Normal speed (regular motion of humans), and there is Jet speed; and there is Supersonic Speed (God’s Speed – when the Hand of God comes upon your life).

Things that Slow People Down

  • Sin & Unrighteousness
  • Focusing on the pains of the Past
  • Distractions will slow you down. Peter was distracted by the boisterous wind in Matt. 14:30-32
  • Fear. The 4 lepers didn’t allow fear to hinder their movement. 2 Kings 7:3-11
Instruments for Speed
  • Diligence & Obedience – Deut. 28:1-2
  • A Lifestyle of Praise – the wall of Jericho crumbled with Praises – Joshua 6:20
  • Persistent and Constant Prayer like the Widow in Luke 18

In closing, before we can operate with Supersonic Speed, we need to repair our altars as Elijah did before God’s Hand came upon Him.

God Bless You!
