Text: Lev. 26:1-13.
” 1 Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the Lord your God. 2 Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord. 3 If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; 4 Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. 5 And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely. 6 And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land. 7 And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. 8 And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. 9 For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you. 10 And ye shall eat old store, and bring forth the old because of the new. 11 And I set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you. 12 And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. 13 I am the Lord your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright.” KJV.
At every point in life, we all have to renew our covenant with God. There is a covenant operating in every man’s life. Either a person is in covenant with God (through Christ Jesus) or by default they are in covenant with Satan (through Adam’s fall). There is no middle ground.
Christianity started by covenant (Abrahamic covenant). God gave Abraham a 7-fold Promise in Gen. 12. The rock or foundation Christianity is built on is the Abrahamic covenant which Christ came to make us a beneficiary. Gal. 3:13-14 – Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, cursed is everyone that hanged on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
As a church we come annually to renew this covenant with God based on Ps. 50:5 – Gather My Saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by Sacrifice. God has protected and kept us for another 365 days. Things don’t just happen in life, there is a covenant at the root of any significant achievement. Without an Altar, there is no covenant. God would often refer the Patriarch to go about to the Altar each time they run into trouble. Just as Jacob went back to Bethel, we are coming back to God to thank and renew His covenant with us.
It was by a covenant God delivered Israel from a 430 year bondage. It was also by a covenant God brought them into their promise land. God’s covenant makes trouble to cease and gives us permanent victory over our enemies just as it helped Joshua to lead God’s people into Canaan.
A covenant is a formal agreement that is legally binding on two parties. God deals with man by covenant, He has never failed on His part. A Covenant is also a commitment made by two or more persons. Marriage is an example of a covenant binding two parties for life. Often a weak party seeks covenant with a strong party for protection. Joshua 2:14 is an example of how a covenant can be used by a strong party (Israel) to protect a weak party (Rehab) from harm. A covenant can be institutionalized by erecting Altars to memorialize it. There is great power and strength in a covenant
